Our Club displayed three of our activities at the Braggart’s Fair held as part of our District’s third quarter Board meeting. Our projects, the Angel Tree, the Spelling Bee, and Bravery Beads, drew a lot of interest and comments. Speaking of bragging, our Club has been asked to put together a display for the Braggart’s Hall at the International Convention this summer.
At the Quarter Board this weekend, President Elly handed the District Bravery Beads Chair for Children’s Hospital in London, Ed Stevens, a cheque from our Club for $3000.00 earned through the selling of bracelets. Ed informed us that our total since the project began, we have earned over $7400.00. Well done group!
Our Club is doing a new fund raiser for next year and we off to a good start with both Covers and 4 inside pages sold in the First Week of Selling!
There will be at least 24 pages in the Christmas Songbook.
We will distribute about 5,000 copies of the book to schools, churches and the sponsors. There may also be a page or two set aside for the kids to colour and draw. Bryan will have more details about this at the dinner meeting.
The executive are looking for ideas for our annual summer get together. So far we have discussed a possible road trip to a winery or brewery and a barbeque.
The Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club, like all Optimist Clubs, was formed to service the needs of the youth in Petrolia and its environs as per the motto of Optimist International, ‘Friend of Youth’. We do this by sponsoring and supporting various sports groups such as:
Minor Hockey
Minor Baseball
Minor Soccer
Scouting
Terry Fox Run
We also run our own special programs for the children in our area.
These include:
Annual Elementary School Cross Country Race
Career Day for grade 7 and 8 students in the three schools we service
Academic Challenge, (a trivia contest), also for the grade 7 and 8’s of this area
Spelling Bee for grades 5 through 8
Respect for Law, that encourages a good rapport between the primary students of the local schools and first responders, such as the police, fire fighters and paramedics
Bike Rodeo that teaches the rules of the road and encourages the safe operation of bicycles.
We fund these activities and sponsorships by raising money through a varienty of efforts including:
Meat Raffles
Annual Elimination Raffle
Annual Angel Tree, (an event that sees local citizens purchase an Angel to commemorate the life of a deceased loved one to be displayed over the Christmas holidays)
Rubber Duck Race
and several other small fund raisers.
